Ltd. “ZAAO” (ZAAO) has installed a mechanized food packaging separation unit at the Circular Economy Center “Daibe” and has also provided staff training for its operation. This new technology will promote more efficient resource utilization and help reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill.
The equipment, supplied by the Italian company Tecnofer Ecoimpianti SRL, is a modern technology that will enable ZAAO to offer a previously unavailable service in the region – pre-treatment of expired food and catering waste.
ZAAO project manager Gunita Vizule emphasizes: “This pilot technology will allow us to expand our range of services and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. The total volume of recycled packaging waste will increase, including a higher volume of processed bio-waste, and the quality of compost produced from bio-waste will be improved. The installation of this equipment is a significant step toward strengthening sustainability in our region and ensuring more efficient resource utilization.”

Work continues in parallel on the development of services to promote the implementation of circular economy principles and strengthen the sustainability of Latvia’s regions. This step is part of a broader strategy for sustainable waste management.
The implementation of the mechanized food packaging separation unit has been carried out within the framework of the LIFE integrated project “Waste To Resources Latvia - boosting regional sustainability and circularity ” (LIFE Waste To Resources IP, LIFE20 IPE/LV/000014) is implemented with the financial support of the LIFE Programme of the European Union and Latvian State Digital Development Agency.
