We invite families to sign up for the campaign: "The Planet Needs Heroes, Not Waste!"

17.10.2024

The Environmental Education Fund, within the framework of the LIFE project "Waste to Resources IP" is implementing the campaign for families, "The Planet Needs Heroes, Not Waste!" The main goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about the amount of waste generated in households and inform the public about sustainable solutions that help reduce waste.

Each family is invited to participate in the campaign and use a specially designed waste audit tool to easily track how much and what type of waste is produced in their household, and what can be done to improve the situation. The campaign will take place multiple times a year — in autumn, winter, spring, and summer — providing families the opportunity to explore their waste generation across different seasons. Families with the best results each season will be rewarded!

"Waste does not occur in nature, but in the human-created world, it is increasing. In the European Union, more than 2.2 billion tons of waste are generated every year. More than a quarter of that is household waste, primarily produced by households. Furthermore, in Latvia, most of this waste still ends up in landfills. To educate the public and reduce the amount of waste as much as possible, we are launching a campaign for families. It is an opportunity for each family to find out how much of a 'waste mountain' you are creating and what you can do to reduce it," says Daniels Trukšāns, Head of the Eco-Schools Program at the Environmental Education Fund.

We invite families to join the campaign "The Planet Needs Heroes, Not Waste!" at atkritumuaudits.lv

The Eco-Schools program is one of the most comprehensive and popular environmental education approaches in the world. Currently, around 200 educational institutions (from kindergartens to universities) in Latvia are part of the Eco-Schools program, while globally, the program involves 48,700 educational institutions in 100 countries. The program encourages every educational institution willing to focus on environmental protection and sustainable development issues in its work to participate. Schools can engage in the Eco-Schools program without applying for Eco-School status, simply by taking part in environmental education activities such as campaigns, competitions, training, experience exchanges, forums, and more. Participation in the Eco-Schools program is a valuable gain not only for the educational community but also for local municipalities, as the program actively promotes public involvement in environmental management alongside other environmental education goals.
