Under the slogan “Nothing extra - more joy!”, the annual Action Days campaign begins, implemented within the framework of the LIFE project “From Waste to Resources”. The campaign invites everyone to reflect on their daily habits and to find joy in simplicity, responsible consumption, and a respectful attitude towards the environment.
This week, more than 100 educational institutions will take part in the campaign to draw attention to various environmental topics such as the use of transport, water conservation, food consumption habits, reuse of items, and waste reduction, as well as other sustainable practices. Schools and other educational institutions will organize workshops, fairs, marches, educational lessons, research projects, and waste audits. Various outdoor activities, excursions, and competitions will also take place to help understand the value of a sustainable future. As Christmas approaches, students of Zaķumuiža Primary School will take part in creative workshops, learning to make environmentally friendly gift packaging from paper bags from shops. Children and teachers of Mērsrags Preschool “Dārta” will clean up the forest, collect branches, cones, and needles, which they will use to cover blueberry bushes and hydrangeas in the schoolyard for winter. Students of Ogre State Gymnasium will go on a joint bike ride to draw attention to environmentally friendly transport, while children from Ventspils Preschool “Varavīksne” will take part in the event “Food Waste in Everyday Life – Cooking Smart and Eco-friendly,” where they will learn sustainable cooking habits and create recipe cards to reduce food waste. At Salaspils Secondary School No. 1, a plant exchange point will be opened, where students will be able to exchange plants and learn how to take care of them.
The participants of Action Days can be found on the Eco-Schools website, where each participant’s activity and location in Latvia are described:here
This year, Action Days particularly highlight the importance of sustainable development and responsible action in our daily lives. We live in a time when climate change, loss of biodiversity, and environmental pollution have become serious challenges worldwide. Therefore, it is important to reconsider our relationship with the planet – how we use resources, what habits we practice, and what kind of environment we will leave for future generations.
The Eco-Schools programme is one of the most comprehensive and popular approaches to environmental education in the world. In Latvia, more than 200 educational institutions (from preschools to universities) are currently participating in the Eco-Schools programme, while globally it includes 48,700 educational institutions across 101 countries. Every educational institution that is ready to focus long-term on environmental protection and sustainable development issues is invited to take part in the programme. Schools can also participate without applying for Eco-School status, simply by joining the programme’s environmental education activities – campaigns, competitions, training, experience exchanges, forums, and more. Participation in the Eco-Schools programme is a valuable benefit not only for the educational institution itself but also for municipalities, as alongside other environmental education goals, the programme actively promotes public involvement in environmental management.
