In preparation for World Water Day, the exhibition "Sea Villains' Laboratory" was opened today at the Latvian Puppet Theatre, drawing attention to the issue of marine pollution. The exhibition will be on display until June 15 and invites visitors of all ages to meet the sea villains and learn how everyone can help make the environment cleaner by changing daily habits and engaging in nature conservation.
The exhibition’s artists—Rūta Briede, Evija Stukle-Zuitiņa, and Ilona Valaine-Blekte—have created menacing sea villains such as Spotty One-Use, Plastimedusa, Fumemon, and others from waste found along the coast. Various harmful elements, including balloons, bottle caps, ropes, confetti, cigarette butts, and other pollutants that threaten the marine ecosystem, have been used to craft these characters.
"We are happy to kick off the celebration of World Water Day with this new Mana Jūra campaign initiative and to continue our collaboration with the Latvian Puppet Theatre. Through Salmon Stas’ Journey and other performances, young visitors and their companions can engage in an interactive and educational experience, learning more about how our daily habits impact the sea and nature while also finding inspiration for actions that will leave a cleaner and safer environment for future generations.
As Mana Jūra data shows, waste pollution along Latvia’s coastline remains critically high. Therefore, every action, no matter how small, has a positive impact and contributes to the cleanliness of the sea," says Jānis Ulme, Head of the Environmental Education Fund.
As part of the exhibition, the annual summer tradition – the Mana Jūra expedition – was highlighted, which will take place this year from July 12 to August 12. As usual, anyone interested can join and become part of the expedition team. More information about the expedition and registration is available on the website: manajura.lv.
