The campaign “BioLoģika” is launching — 20 interactive excursion programs for students about the circular economy and sustainability

01.10.2025

The Ministry of Climate and Energy (KEM) is launching a new school year campaign — “BioLoģika” — offering students 20 educational and interactive excursion programs. These programs will help students learn the principles of the circular economy, provide insight into waste management processes, and promote responsible and smart use of resources. The programs are tailored for both younger students (grades 1–4) and older students (grades 5–9), making the learning process even more engaging and hands-on.

Each excursion program is designed to combine theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world experiences in nature and urban environments. Students will explore environmentally friendly solutions and sustainability principles through active participation. During the excursions, they will have the opportunity to visit municipal waste management sites and circular businesses, walk along nature trails, study forest ecosystems, and take part in interactive lessons with practical assignments.

Minister of Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis:
“Knowledge that is reinforced through real-life examples seen during engaging excursions provides a much broader perspective on topics that are important to our society, such as the circular economy. The circular economy must evolve from a theoretical concept into a natural model of action for all of us. The approach practiced over the past century — piling up waste — has outlived its time. Waste must be given a new life through recycling and reuse. Concrete examples and hands-on experiences will help students integrate sustainable models more quickly into their daily habits. I would like to thank everyone involved in developing these materials for creating such engaging programs that allow teachers to offer students exciting, real-world experiences without significant additional time investment.”

To make teachers’ work easier, a special methodology with digital and printed learning materials has been developed as part of the campaign.

The excursion programs cover all five regions of Latvia - Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale, Latgale, and the Riga region. Each excursion program lasts an average of 3 to 6 hours. Most of the sites are free of charge, though a small participation fee may apply at certain locations.

An additional benefit - every class that participates in one of the offered excursion programs by the end of this school year can apply to receive a free gift: the board game “The Crazy Fox Sorts Waste.” This Latvian-made game, based on the UNO concept, teaches children and adults how to sort waste correctly in a fun and engaging way.

How to apply for an excursion?

A webinar on the practical steps for applying to the excursions will take place on October 7 at 16:00 on the Zoom platform (registration for the webinar is available here). More information about the application process, excursion programs, and learning materials can be found on the website wastetoresources.kem.gov.lv under the section “BioLoģika”.
