Industrial symbiosis (hereinafter referred to as - IS) is a form of cooperation and resource sharing between different companies and sectors, in which they form synergistic relationships to achieve resource efficiency, increase productivity and reduce environmental impacts.
IS offers a great opportunity for companies to work together to find cost-effective, sustainable solutions for waste disposal or reduction. This not only has a positive impact on industry revenues, but also opens up opportunities for cities and regions to move towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial practices.
Understanding the potential of the IS market can be very valuable in motivating policy makers to look for ways to support its development and businesses to further explore the opportunities it can offer.
Although there are circular economy-oriented companies in Latvia that have already found ways to reuse resources, a large number of companies do not have the experience and knowledge to reuse resources.
To date, no industrial symbiosis initiatives have been implemented in Latvia and there is little understanding of industrial symbiosis itself. To increase knowledge, it is important to select cases of symbiosis that have not yet been identified in Latvia.
Creation of the SINERGIA platform is a major step forward for the development of industrial symbiosis in Latvia. One of the main objectives is to foster cooperation between companies to find cost-effective, sustainable solutions to eliminate or reduce waste.
