In order to find and discuss possible solutions for sustainable environmental education in Latvia, on Thursday, 19 October, in "Getliņi EKO" Environmental Education Centre, a seminar "Sustainable Environmental Education in Waste Management Sector" took place.
The seminar discussed the role of state and local governments in educating the society about the circular economy, importance of data in planning environmental education activities, and the variety of environmental education methods. The seminar was attended by representatives of Latvia's largest landfills, waste managers and recycling companies, and representatives of state and municipal institutions.
Ms Alise Vecozola, Head of the LIFE Integrated Project Implementation Unit of the MEPRD, delivered a presentation on the LIFE Waste To Resources IP project and its deliverables.
"Environmental education in waste management in Latvia is the path to a sustainable future where waste is a valuable resource. Environmental education means being aware that every step we take leaves a footprint. Therefore, environmental education is not only our duty to ourselves, but also our concern for the quality of life of current and future generations", says Ms Inese Avota, Environmental Education Project Manager at “Getliņi EKO”.
Mr Armands Utināns from “Eco Baltia vide” shared his experience on the importance of data in planning environmental education activities.
“Getliņi EKO” is currently one of the most popular environmental education centres in Latvia, attended by 8,000 visitors from Latvia and abroad every year. Visit to the household waste landfill "Getliņi" gives you an idea of the life cycle of household waste. The tour also gives visitors an insight into landfill management, energy production and how vegetables are grown in one of the most modern greenhouses in Europe.
The LLC (SIA) "Getliņi EKO” is a company jointly established by the local governments of Riga state city and Ropaži local government, which manages the largest municipal solid waste landfill in the Baltic States - “Getliņi”. The landfill is one of the most modern in Europe and, at the moment, it is being made and developed as a modern and safe waste recycling centre.
