On February 13th of this year, at the invitation of the Regional Circular Economy Education and Competence Centre "Daibe," science teachers from Valmiera Municipality gathered at the Nature and Technology Park "URDA." In the professional development course for educators titled “Nature – Sustainability and Rational Energy Use,” the main focus was on exploring natural processes and their connection to human economic activities. The course was led by Iluta Dauškāne, a biology PhD, researcher, and expert in the field of biology, who shared her extensive knowledge base and practical experience in the five academic-hour course.
"Biology is the bridge between humans and nature. The more we understand the laws of nature, the more consciously we are able to live in harmony with the surrounding environment. Teachers' knowledge is essential because the information they provide shapes students' attitudes towards nature and the environment," emphasized Iluta Dauškāne.
During the session, teachers visited the Circular Economy Centre "Daibe," where they learned about waste management processes and their improvements. This was followed by an outdoor lecture, where participants explored key biology topics such as transpiration, adaptation, and evolution, using real examples from the plant world. At the end of the day, participants actively engaged in laboratory work – using microscopes to study cross-sections of coniferous leaves and analyze plant adaptation mechanisms.
ZAAO invites all interested science teachers from the ZAAO operational region to join the upcoming free sessions, in order to collectively promote understanding of sustainability issues in the field of biology.
The training will be repeated on March 27th and April 22nd this year. Interested individuals can register in advance by searching for the application form at www.urda.lv/pieaugušajiem, calling the phone number 25459399, or emailing: izglitiba@zaao.lv.
