How Schools and Kindergartens Reduce Waste and Teach Sustainability in Practice

19.12.2025

On December 16 of this year, a webinar in the series “Dialogue with Science” took place, bringing together more than 80 representatives of educational institutions, municipal environmental experts, waste management operators, and other interested parties. The event was organized with the aim of sharing examples of good practice and promoting sustainable thinking in educational institutions.

Updates on the LIFE project “Waste to Resources IP” were presented by Sandija Svarupa. She spoke about the educational materials and videos developed within the project, as well as compiled other useful educational resources and publications that schools and kindergartens can use in the learning process.

Daniels Trukšāns, a representative of the Environmental Education Foundation, presented the results of the Eco-Schools waste audit for 2023 and 2024. These clearly show how students are practically involved in waste sorting, weighing, and improving their environment.

Edīte Čepule from Ltd “ALLAS” introduced the company’s developed collection of environmental games, which can serve as a creative addition to the learning process. She also spoke about circular economy initiatives in Rēzekne, including the establishment of a swap cabinet at the Children and Youth Centre “Zeimuļs”.

Sustainability initiatives in preschool education were presented by Santa Zgrunda from Jelgava Preschool Educational Institution “Lācītis”. Her experience showed how important the joint involvement of children, parents, and educators is, as well as a creative approach to everyday activities.

Meanwhile, Inita Švāne from Irlava Primary School provided insight into how circular economy activities are implemented at the school level, promoting students’ understanding of resource conservation. The presentations included many practical ideas on how educational institutions can engage in waste reduction and the implementation of sustainable initiatives within their institutions.

The webinar once again confirmed that educational institutions are a strong driving force for change, as they shape the habits of future society. Participants emphasized that the principles of the circular economy are not just theory – they are practical solutions that help reduce the amount of waste and promote a sustainable lifestyle.

The webinar was implemented within the LIFE IP project “Waste to Resources in Latvia” (LIFE Waste to Resources IP). Such webinars are organized quarterly within the project and address various topics related to waste reduction and the implementation of circular economy principles.
