Grēta Girvaite: Permaculture Tool “GALA Garden”

15.07.2024

Concluding the series of articles on the authors of the best works in the scientific research competition, we introduce Gréta Girvaite, a laureate of the competition.

Gréta is from Kuldīga and moved to Liepāja to study metal product design at the Liepāja Music, Art, and Design High School, and later environmental engineering at Riga Technical University in Liepāja (formerly Liepāja University).

She says: “I studied in this field because nature is very special to me, and it is necessary to develop environmental protection. My dream is to work in large forest and mountain areas in the field of environmental protection.”

During her studies, Gréta was actively interested in and researched environmental problems and solutions. The idea for the permaculture tool “GALA Garden” emerged during her second year, while participating in a hackathon with her classmates.

“Although we didn't win a prize at the hackathon, the local government showed interest in this idea. Since I was very interested in this idea, I wanted to continue developing it,” says Gréta.

“GALA Garden” is a practical tool that can be both self-made and ordered from Gréta, as she developed it in her rural home. The wooden parts are treated using an environmentally friendly preservation method—burning. The tool is hexagonal in shape, as it is aesthetically pleasing and connects in an interesting pattern with other tools, forming a honeycomb pattern. This tool is also suitable for people who have difficulty bending in the garden, as the garden is at a convenient height.

“GALA Garden” ensures a circular cycle within the system—moisture and bio-waste from the garden go into the compost; the compost returns nutrients and some heat to the garden.

“With the ‘GALA Garden’ permaculture tool, I wanted to provide a better and more convenient option for people living in cities to engage in gardening and the sorting and processing of compostable bio-waste. The tool will be tested for use on balconies so that an even larger part of society can use it. Currently, the tool can be placed on various surfaces—lawn, pavement, asphalt, etc. And if it is not possible to place the tool near the home (for example, in apartment buildings), I encourage going to the local community garden, as their availability will be developed in the future, and they are already available in Liepāja and Riga,” Gréta enthusiastically explains her idea.

G. Girvaite's scientific research paper "Permaculture Tool ‘GALA Garden’" is available here.
