As part of the LIFE integrated project “Waste to Resources IP”, public awareness-raising activities on the environmental impact of cigarette butts are continuing. Within the project, a series of educational infographics has been prepared by Ltd “Zaļā josta” to explain the composition of cigarette butts, the pollution they cause, and possible solutions for reducing the problem.

As part of the infographic series, a material has been developed to draw attention to the impact of cigarette butts on the environment and human health. The infographic clearly illustrates what happens after cigarette butts are discarded in inappropriate places and explains the consequences of such behaviour.

There is a common misconception in society that a small cigarette butt discarded in the environment does not cause significant harm. However, rain and wind can easily carry cigarette butts from pavements, roadsides and green areas into stormwater drains, from where they enter rivers, lakes and even the sea.

Cigarette butts contain plastic and various chemical substances that gradually leach into the surrounding environment. Over time, filters break down into microplastic particles, becoming a long-lasting source of pollution.

Studies show that substances found in cigarette butts can have a negative impact on aquatic organisms, while microplastic particles may be ingested by various animals after being mistaken for food. The consequences of such pollution can affect the entire ecosystem and may lead to the death of fish, marine species and birds. By consuming food products - such as plants, fish and seafood - affected by pollution caused by cigarette butts, harmful substances and microplastics can end up on our plates.

Changing public habits is one of the key prerequisites for reducing this type of pollution. Every properly disposed cigarette butt means less pressure on the environment and a cleaner surrounding environment for future generations.
