Call to Action - join the "Mana jūra" expedition

03.06.2024

As part of the "Mana jūra" campaign, the green expedition organized under the LIFE project "From Waste to Resources" will commence on July 13th at 12:30 PM at the Ainaži pier. Each year, anyone interested has the opportunity to join the expedition team, choosing the segment of the expedition that suits them best.

Over the course of a month, from July 13th to August 13th, the Latvian coastline will be traversed for the 13th consecutive year, walking more than 500 kilometers from Estonia to the Lithuanian border. Daily monitoring of marine debris will be conducted, providing insight into the actual environmental conditions along the coast and forming a basis for practical actions and solutions for sustainable coastal management.

During the expedition, participants will also have the opportunity to explore the coast and the sea, engaging in workshops and joint activities with nature experts, enjoying musical evenings at sunset, and family-friendly activities. Participants can choose an expedition segment that matches their interests, preferences, and capabilities.

The results of the "Mana jūra" campaign's marine debris monitoring in 2023 indicated that an average of 375 pieces of waste were found in every 100 meters of the beach area, with an average of 35 different types of waste per beach. This exceeds the EU Good Environmental Status target of 20 waste units per 100 meters by almost 19 times. Among the total amount of waste, 75.7% consisted of various plastic products and polymer materials, followed by paper and cardboard (7%), metal (6.7%), and lower amounts of glass and ceramics, food waste, wood, rubber, textiles and clothing, and chemicals.

The goal of the green expedition is to draw the attention of the Latvian public to the issue of marine debris and to encourage residents, municipalities, and businesses to engage in joint efforts and practical actions for the protection of the coast and the Baltic Sea.

The "Mana jūra" campaign is implemented by the Environmental Education Fund, in cooperation with municipalities and companies interested in coastal protection. The "Green Expedition" is part of the European Union's LIFE 2018-2020 project "Waste as Resources in Latvia - Promoting Regional Sustainability and Circular Economy by Implementing the Concept of Waste as Resources."
