From 21 July to 5 August 2026, visitors are invited to explore the educational exhibition “A Cigarette Butt Is No Small Matter” at the Rīga Plaza shopping centre in Riga. The exhibition draws attention to one of the most widespread sources of environmental pollution worldwide – improperly discarded cigarette butts.

The exhibition was created by “Zaļā josta” Ltd within the framework of the LIFE integrated project “Waste as Resources in Latvia”. Three large-format infographics present scientifically based information about the composition of cigarette butts, their impact on the environment, and simple actions everyone can take to help reduce this type of pollution.

Although a cigarette butt is a small piece of waste, it can cause significant negative consequences. The exhibition explains that cigarette filters are mainly made of cellulose acetate, a type of plastic that can take 10–15 years to break down in the environment, releasing tiny microplastic fibres and harmful substances.

The exhibition also reveals the true scale of the problem. According to data compiled in international studies, approximately 4.5 trillion cigarette butts enter the environment every year, making them one of the most common forms of litter worldwide. In addition, during smoking, filters accumulate nicotine, heavy metals, and other toxic chemicals. Once a cigarette butt enters the environment, these substances can leach into soil and water, causing significant pollution.

Visitors to the exhibition “A Cigarette Butt Is No Small Matter” will also be able to learn about the journey of a cigarette butt after it is dropped on the ground – from the urban environment into stormwater drainage systems, rivers, and eventually the sea. The exhibition explains why a seemingly insignificant piece of waste can become a long-term source of pollution and affect both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Visitors will also receive simple recommendations on how smokers can reduce their impact on the environment: dispose of cigarette butts only in designated places, use a pocket ashtray, and prevent cigarette butts from entering the natural environment.

The aim of the exhibition is not only to present facts, but also to encourage visitors to reflect on their everyday habits. Even one responsible choice can help reduce pollution, while the collective actions of many people can create a significant environmental benefit.

“Zaļā josta” Ltd invites everyone to visit the exhibition “A Cigarette Butt Is No Small Matter” from 21 July to 5 August at the Rīga Plaza shopping centre, in the recreation area next to the Stenders store, at 71 Mūkusalas Street, Riga. Visitors will be able to learn about the environmental impact of cigarette butts and discover simple ways to reduce this type of pollution.
