With the slogan “The Planet Needs Heroes!” the annual “Action Days” campaign begins today, implemented within the framework of the LIFE project “From Waste to Resources.” Its goal is to draw public attention to global environmental challenges and inspire sustainable action, not only during Action Week from November 4th to 10th but also in the long term.
This week, over 100 educational institutions will participate in the campaign to raise awareness of various environmental topics, such as the use of transportation, food consumption, waste reduction, repairing items, and other sustainable practices. Schools and other educational institutions will organize marches, debates, educational lessons, studies, flash mobs, waste audits, as well as outdoor activities, excursions, and contests to help understand the value of a sustainable future.
Māteru Jura Kazdangas Primary School plans to enhance its surroundings by organizing tree planting, creating an insect house, and, together with students' families, participating in a waste audit campaign “The Planet Needs Heroes, Not Waste!”. Meanwhile, Puzes Primary School will prepare Christmas decorations from recycled paper products, collect donations for the Talsi Animal Shelter with local residents, and promote awareness of waste sorting and recycling.
The campaign aims to encourage the public to actively participate in building a sustainable future by educating and engaging schools and businesses in Action Days activities. It is an opportunity not only to think globally but also to act locally, taking concrete steps to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
Participants in the Action Days can be found on the Eco-Schools website, where each participant’s activity and location in Latvia are described: ej.uz/erd24
Eco-Schools demonstrate every year that sustainability and environmental protection should be considered not just in November during Action Days, but all year round. Through daily initiatives and activities, Eco-Schools foster environmentally friendly habits, showing that adopting a sustainable lifestyle is essential for our and the planet’s future. This way, they inspire the broader public to make responsible decisions that help preserve and protect the environment in their daily lives.
The Eco-Schools program is one of the world’s most comprehensive and popular approaches to environmental education, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Around 200 educational institutions (ranging from preschools to universities) are currently involved in the Eco-Schools program in Latvia, and globally, 48,700 educational institutions across 101 countries participate. Any educational institution interested in long-term environmental protection and sustainable development can join the program. Participation in the Eco-Schools program does not require applying for Eco-School status; it can simply involve taking part in the program’s environmental education activities—campaigns, events, competitions, trainings, exchanges, forums, and more. Participation in the Eco-Schools program is a valuable asset not only for the educational institution’s collective but also for municipalities, as it actively promotes public involvement in managing the environment alongside other environmental education goals.
