ZAAO installs mechanised food packaging separation unit

"ZAAO" Ltd (ZAAO) has installed a mechanised food packaging separation machine at the Circular Economy Centre "Daibe" for the separation of food packaging from expired food products, which is an important step towards sustainable waste management.

The new technology, supplied by the Italian company Tecnofer Ecoimpianti SRL, will allow food waste to be separated and recycled more efficiently. The equipment will not only contribute to a more rational use of resources, but will also significantly reduce the amount of unsorted waste going to landfill. Alongside the installation of the equipment, staff training is being carried out to ensure efficient and quality work with the new technology.

This project is part of a wider strategy to promote the circular economy and strengthen the sustainability of Latvia's regions.

Hyrogas signs cooperation agreement with Korean company Hyojun Precision

On February 3, 2025, Hyojun Precision of Korea signed a cooperation agreement with Hyrogas Ltd. and announced plans to manufacture and distribute environmentally friendly gasification equipment in the global market to reduce carbon emissions.

Hyrogas has developed a special technology that converts waste and biomass into high-efficiency synthesis gas, with support from the LIFE programme. This is an important contribution to achieving zero emission targets, as carbon emissions are significantly reduced compared to fossil fuels. This technology is an important step in a global market that is increasingly focusing on eco-friendly solutions.

Guidelines for construction waste management nominated for international award

The "Guidelines for Construction Waste Segregation on Construction Sites in Commercial and Public Works Projects" developed by the Latvian Builders' Association (LBA) and associated experts have been nominated for the prestigious NonHazCity Building Award for outstanding achievements in sustainable and environmentally friendly construction in the Baltic Sea Region. These guidelines provide practical recommendations on how to reduce, separate and recycle waste on construction sites, contributing to the circular economy and sustainable development.

The nomination for the international award is an important recognition of Latvia's efforts to develop its construction sector more sustainably. The guidelines are available to all interested parties and can be a valuable tool for improving waste management.

Dialogue with science: workshop on "Pay as you throw"

On February 21, an online seminar "Pay as you throw " took place as part of the "Dialogue with Science". The seminar provided an opportunity for researchers, students, entrepreneurs and private individuals wishing to deepen their knowledge on sustainable waste management to discuss how to make the waste management system in Latvia more efficient. The "Pay as you throw" approach aims to introduce waste management solutions for citizens that allow them to pay only for the waste they produce, reducing costs for citizens, promoting waste sorting, responsible waste management and focusing on how to reduce environmental impact.

Ecoschool Winter Forum 2025: Education, experience and sustainability in one place

From February 21 to 23, the Eco-Schools Winter Forum, organized by the Foundation for Environmental Education, took place for the tenth time.

The 2025 Winter Forum, held at Ropaži Secondary School, brought together 300 young people and educators from all over Latvia to discuss environmental and sustainability issues. This event was a great opportunity to share experiences, learn new methods and strengthen the Eco-Schools movement, which has been promoting a responsible attitude and care for the environment in schools and local communities for more than 20 years.

Workshops, discussions and practical seminars were held during the forum, during which participants were inspired and gained knowledge on how to promote sustainable development in everyday life. The forum emphasized that young people are more ready for positive changes and that education is the basis for creating a sustainable future.

The forum was organized in cooperation with Ropaži Municipality, Ropaži Secondary School, LIFE Waste To Resources IP and the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund.

Teachers from Valmiera Municipality are enhancing their knowledge about nature and sustainability

On February 13th of this year, science teachers from Valmiera Municiplaity participated in a unique professional qualification development course for teachers “Nature – sustainability and rational use of energy” at the Regional Circular Economy Education and Competence Center “Daibe”. Together with Doctor of Biology Iluta Dauškāne, the teachers learned about natural processes and their connection with human economic activity in exciting seminars and practical workshops. Such an approach not only strengthens the competence of teachers, but also promotes sustainable values ​​in the next generation, because it is the information passed on by teachers that shapes students' attitudes towards nature and the environment.

ZAAO invites all interested science teachers from the ZAAO region to the next free classes in order to jointly promote understanding of sustainability issues in the field of biology.

The training for teachers will take place on March 27 and April 22 of this year, and will take place at the Nature and Technology Park “URDA”.

Teachers learn sustainable solutions to reduce waste in schools

Other Latvian teachers were also able to improve their knowledge in the training program organized by the Foundation for Environmental Education, where they learned sustainable solutions for waste reduction in schools. The training took place at the end of January this year, and approximately 30 teachers from different regions of Latvia met.

· Juta Dekšne (Rezekne Academy of Technologies) presented a study on food waste reduction in schools.

·  Sandija Svarupa (Ministry of Climate and Energy of Latvia) presented the circular economy roadmap.

· Ingūna Salmiņa (Riga Elementary School “Rīdze”) shared the school's experience in reducing waste.

Next, educators analyzed problems in group work, created models of good practice, and learned methods for school waste audits, as well as data usage practices.

This knowledge will not only improve waste management in schools, but also inspire students to act responsibly towards the environment at home.

We invite you to visit the exhibition!

In preparation for World Water Day, we invite you to visit the exhibition "Sea Villains Laboratory", dedicated to the negative impact of marine pollution. The exhibition introduces menacing creatures that symbolize various types of waste - plastic, microplastics, cigarette butts and other elements dangerous to the sea.

Artists Rūta Briede and Evija Stukle-Zuitiņa, in collaboration with the head of the Foundation for Environmental Education Jānis Ulmis, have created an interactive exhibition that encourages visitors to get involved and become sea rescuers.

The exhibition can be visited from March 21st to June 15th of this year at the Latvian Puppet Theatre, Krišjāņa Barona Street 16/18.

Seminar “Sustainable Packaging: From Design to Recycling 2025”

On April 15th, 2025, the annual seminar “Sustainable Packaging: From Design to Recycling 2025” will be held in Jelgava, organized by the Latvian Green Point together with the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, as well as the Packaging Association of Latvia. The seminar will bring together industry experts, entrepreneurs and researchers to discuss the most current trends and challenges.

Various topics will be discussed during the event, including improving the existing system, high-quality and efficient packaging recycling, challenges of packaging from different materials, future vision and practical steps.

Registration for the seminar is open until April 16th, 2025. The number of places is limited.
