Food date labels explained: "Use by" and "Best before"

08.12.2025

Food labelling provides a wide range of information about a food product. The label includes information on the product’s nutrition declaration, the list of ingredients, including allergens, as well as the food product’s date marking – “Use by…” or “Best before…”.

The “Use by…” date (expiry date) and the “Best before…” date (minimum durability date) are often unclear to consumers, but the differences between them are easy to understand if we know what they are.

These differences are explained in this visual.

The information is also available on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture in the section “Buyer’s Guide”.
